This is just a very small segment - there were 30,000 people there. Everything is completely self sufficient. You have to bring all your own supplies (including food, water, etc) and it is 'leave no trace', you must pack everything back out (garbage, gray water, etc). The ground is made up of a very fine dust, called Playa. It used to be a lake, now it is just an alkaline flat.
