Cleanup of C Street is goal of program. I perked up at this article, since I walk down C street fairly regularly to visit my gym (on 7th) and back, usually at night. Anna and I are also fans of the spicy eggplant at Gen Lai Sen (12th, right across from the trolley stop).

C street downtown has remained a bit sketchy in places (trolley stop @ 12th for example), but I guess I am surprised that it makes people “fear for their safety”. I suspect a lot of it will entail relocating the few homeless that are sleeping around doorways at night. The supporters are probably the businesses and new urbanites – if you spend 400k for 400sq feet you might not be comfortable with a homeless guy sleeping on your gaslamp bar route.

During the summer, all of the shelters are closed. If you walk down 13th between C and Broadway at night, you will find about 20 people camped out. It is a similar situation around the warehouses further south. Are the cops going to push them out into the residential areas of Sherman Heights or Golden Hill? There is already a significant number that camp in the bush around Balboa park and canyons near the golf course.

Where are they supposed to go?

Yeah, downtown redevelopment is happening so fast that the community just can’t keep up with it. I have a feeling that the homeless are going to get pushed further east and south until they’re either in Anza-Borrego or Mexico.

The thing is that all of the services (Salvation Army, St Vincents, etc) are all downtown. So I can’t see too many of them leaving the area…
