Cleanup of C Street is goal of program. I perked up at this article, since I walk down C street fairly regularly to visit my gym (on 7th) and back, usually at night. Anna and I are also fans of the spicy eggplant at Gen Lai Sen (12th, right across from the trolley stop).

C street downtown has remained a bit sketchy in places (trolley stop @ 12th for example), but I guess I am surprised that it makes people “fear for their safety”. I suspect a lot of it will entail relocating the few homeless that are sleeping around doorways at night. The supporters are probably the businesses and new urbanites – if you spend 400k for 400sq feet you might not be comfortable with a homeless guy sleeping on your gaslamp bar route.

During the summer, all of the shelters are closed. If you walk down 13th between C and Broadway at night, you will find about 20 people camped out. It is a similar situation around the warehouses further south. Are the cops going to push them out into the residential areas of Sherman Heights or Golden Hill? There is already a significant number that camp in the bush around Balboa park and canyons near the golf course.

Where are they supposed to go?

I have too much crap

Garage sale and a move this weekend.. I will be busybusy. But, I hope to catch Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence – it is playing at The Ken. I liked the visual style of the first movie, and the exploration of what it means to be human in the age of AI.

Wired covers the issue with axial locks (see bellow). These are used in a lot of things.

Anyone out there with a circular-key-type bike lock (think Kryptonite U-Lock), might want to visit this page and go buy a new key lock: Opening a bike lock with a plastic ball point pen.

Anna and I went down and got our marriage license this morning. No hassles, it was pretty easy.

I’ve been looking into all sorts of places in Peru, trying to figure out where else I want to go. I am really liking everything I read about Chachapoyas. It looks like an amazing pre-tourist Machu Picchu. There is a reason there are not many tourists there though.. a flight and a long bus ride to a town where there are not any tourist services. You want a tour? Do your own.

It sounds really interesting, but I don’t think I will have the time to go. We would be looking at about 3 extra days of travel.

I started to comment the Burning Man photos, but am a ways off from finishing.

Reno. I spent a lot of time in Reno this last trip to Burning Man. Pete’s flight was delayed about 11 hours, so Anna and I had a lot of time to wander around the place.

- Casinos. Sure you can get a hot dog and a beer for $1.50, but your hotel (El Dorado, supposedly 3.5 stars) gives you a crappy smoking room instead of your pre-paid non smoking room.
- Driving in Reno sucks. It is always under construction (same section of highway has been messed up for the past 3 years), missing or erroneous signs, and the drivers think a turn signal means accelerate into my blind spot.

Its not all bad though. We went to the “#1 voted Basque Restaurant in Nevada”. How hard is that? We were suspicious, but just then walked by 2 more Basque restaurants. It was an interesting place. Everything is served family style on a big table, you eat with other people. We got there and started to chat up the locals. It was a great time. My neighbor offered me some sweet bread in wine sauce (sweet bread = thymus glands), which I liked. I was feeling adventurous, so I ordered the tripe.

Well, I ate a bit of it. It tasted good, the texture was ok (sort of spongy), but I could not handle the smell. It still had a very strong ‘internal workings’ aroma that I couldn’t get over. There was plenty of other great food to fill me up though.

We watched Hero while waiting for Pete at the local meglo-plex. I liked it. It is the same sort of style as Crouching Tiger (which I also liked), but the visuals in Hero are quite amazing.

Wow, check this out: Police in Paris have discovered a fully equipped cinema-cum-restaurant in a large and previously uncharted cavern underneath the capital’s chic 16th arrondissement.

It won’t be long now… Poor credit history can doom job offers

“The basic story is that San Diego has become a thoroughly corrupt community in which the power players cut the deals, you don’t ask any questions, and everybody gets what they want” More San Diego fun, Enron-by-the-Sea style.
